Summary

Excavation in 1986 involved the clearing of a large area in the N half of the priory site to the levels of c 1540 and the excavation of the S transept. The entire N half of the priory church was revealed in 1987, and most of the N transept, Lady Chapel and choir was excavated. Some 160 burials were found within or close to the church. A number of construction phases were distinguished in the N nave wall, and the transept-end chapels were defined. The major periods of building appear to have been the early 12th c for much of the nave, and the mid-13th c for the choir and Lady Chapel extension. N of the choir large spreads of Reigate stone chippings and stone footings suggested that this was an area of temporary buildings used during the construction of the priory. (For plan, see MPY88.)
