Chelsea

(1745 - 1770)

The porcelain factory at Chelsea was set up and managed by Nicholas Sprimont, a Hugenot silversmith. He continued to make silver after starting his porcelain business, and many pieces of early Chelsea are influenced by silver shapes. The location of his factory was conveniently close to the pleasure gardens at Ranelagh, patronised by Royalty and the aristocracy. Amongst Sprimont's rich and powerful patrons was Sir Everard Fawkener, who was secretary to the Duke of Cumberland. Fawkener enabled Sprimont to gain access to an important collection of Meissen in the possession of the ambassador to Dresden. Many Chelsea figures made in the mid eighteenth century are copies of Meissen originals.

The factory specialised in figures, vases, and fine enamelled tablewares, aimed at the most exclusive end of the market. Although the paste was modified several times, Chelsea porcelain was never as serviceable as the Chinese Export or some of the other English factories, and most of the Chelsea wares were probably intended for light use or simply for ornament. In the 1760s the Chelsea factory made tableware and figures in the high Rococo style, influenced by the sumptuous porcelain made by the French royal porcelain factory at Sevres.
